On June 19 - Recognize Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day when the last slaves in the United States were emancipated. WHAT IS JUNETEENTH? Juneteenth is an annual observance to celebrate the date Union soldiers enforced the Emancipation Proclamation freeing all remaining slaves in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865. Texas was the last state in rebellion, following the end of the Civil War, to allow enslavement. This day in 1865, is recognized for the message of freedom that was announced to some of the last enslaved people in America by General Gordon Granger. He arrived in Galveston, Texas and issued General Order No. 3, almost two and one-half years after President Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in forty-five states thanks to the work of the REV. RONALD V. MYERS, SR., M.D., Founder of the Juneteenth Holiday campaign and Foundation to support the observance of Juneteenth.
